My FTP connection fails with Dreamweaver.
Most of the troubleshooting tips found here apply to any other FTP utilities as well, not just to
Dreamweaver's FTP tool.
-
Are you connected to the Internet? Yeah, I know, sounds silly, but it does happen sometimes. Go on, check it out. I won't tell.
-
Try a dedicated FTP client instead. The most common reason for another FTP client to work when Dreamweaver's
FTP tool does not is a misconfigured server or buggy daemon. Many dedicated FTP clients are written to compensate for
these issues on the server side. Dreamweaver's FTP tool is not. It expects a standard and properly-configured server
setup, appropriate permissions to the user, and properly-formatted FTP series codes. DW's FTP tool also
expects to have the Host Directory information entered exactly as specified by the newest FTP standards and will not
be as forgiving as other clients regarding that issue.

Design Notes:
For those of you unfortunate enough to find DW's FTP utility unreliable when you go beyond
simple Put operations, feel free to upload your files using a separate FTP client like WS_FTP,
CuteFTP, FTPSynch, or BulletProof FTP in Windows; and iSynch, Fetch, DropFTP, or Anarchie Pro
on Macs. Unlike MS FrontPage, using a dedicated FTP client in concert with Dreamweaver
will not affect your Web site. That is, as long as you take care to upload the files in their proper places
within the /public_html/ folde.

The Host Name may be typed in wrong. If the address is something like http://my_domain.com, leave off the
http:// part of the address. If the domain name doesn't work, try using the IP number instead. The IP number of your account is in your "Welcome" e-mail.
-
The user name and password may be wrong:
- Verify that you are using the correct user name. Again if you are not sure,
please doublecheck your "Welcome" letter. Note that usernames don't have
uppercase characters: they are always lowercase at A+ Hosting. As a last
resort, contact A+ Accounting for the correct User ID.
- Verify that you are using the correct password. Re-enter the password. It is
easy to type in a wrong letter or number in this field because of the
encryption. If it will still not connect, double-check your "Welcome" letter. As a
last resort, verify the password A+ Accounting.
- The Internet may be down partially, or it may be very busy and cause things
to slow down to such a degree that the delay causes the FTP program to time out.
This happens from time to time. Try again later in the day or early the next morning.
If this persists, PING and TRACEROUTE are useful to diagnose these problems: use them
and e-mail us your results.
- If you have a connection time-out error, it mainly has to do with the client
not receiving a response from the server for a specific command. Try increasing the
time-out value of Dreamwever's FTP tool (Edit > Preferences > Site > FTP Time Out) and see if
this eliminates the problem. Try using the IP address to connect. If you can see your account
from the web, but cannot FTP in, then it is probably a problem with your ISP and not the server.
Contact them to see what the problem is.
6. If you manage to upload some files, but then your FTP program lags, this may be a problem with your ISP's
proxy. Try using the IP address to connect, since that often helps to sidestep the proxy. Contact your ISP for more
information, since we cannot alter your ISP's proxy.
7. If you are on a LAN, your LAN may be down. Please consult with your LAN personnel to verify the
outage.
8. If you are behind a firewall, try to either disable it, configure it so that it allows your
FTP client to connect, or do your FTP from another computer.
9. Our server may be down. Although possible, this one is unlikely, so please verify the above information
before e-mailing Web Prime.
